What are Heat Recovery Filters and why should I change them?

What are MVHR Heat Recovery Filters?

All MVHR Heat Recovery units contain filters and they play a key role in the performance of the ventilation system in your home.

There are two filters, one for supply air and one for extract air.

The supply air filter is responsible for filtering out particles and pollution entering your home from outside and the extract air filter is responsible for protecting the motor and internal components from the air that is being extracted from your home.

MVHR Heat Recovery Filters help ensure good indoor air quality and protect the unit, but are only one part of the system that requires attention and cleaning.  Motors, Heat Cube, Air Valves and Duct Connections are also areas where dust and debris builds up

Why should I change and maintain my MVHR Heat Recovery Filters?

You can’t see air, but its full of dust, debris, particles and grease. (it's job is to remove these from your air, so it's going to get clogged with all of these things)

As air moves through your MVHR Heat Recovery system dust and debris builds up and collects in key areas including the motors, heat cube, filters and air valves. When the filters are clogged (and the system) it can't move air as effectively - think about your hoover filters and how well it performs when it needs changing or empltying!

If you dont reguarly change your filters and/or service your unit you may start to experience the following issues:

  • Increased noise
  • Poor Performance
  • System Issues

How often should I change/check my MVHR Heat Recovery Filters?

It is recommended that you check and replace your MVHR Heat Recovery filters every 6 months.

Your supply air filter will always be the dirtiest/most clogged as it is managing the air coming into you home and will therefore be impacted by external pollution levels and particulate matter in the air.

You can check the air quality in your area and recommendations for MVHR Filters by using the ventilation and air quality tool developed by our accreidted service partner HRV Group.  This can provide guidance based on the pollution levels at your postcode and how often to change your MVHR Heat Recovery Filters
