How does MVHR Work?

MVHR is a whole house ventilation system that extracts stale, polluted air and excess moisture out of a home, whilst bringing in air from outside.  It helps keep your home comfortable, free from mould and condensation and is very energy efficient - helping reduce your heating bills by recovering and reusing heat.  The system consists of a unit and a network of ducting that runs to every room in the house.

Humid and moisture ladden air is continuously extracted from wet rooms (kitchen/utility/bathrooms) - as this air is extracted, the heat is transfered into a heat exchanger inside the unit.  At the same time, supply air is continuously brought in from outside, passing through the heat exchanger and filters before it reaches your living areas to ensure a good level of indoor air quality and comfort.

All units have a 'Summer Bypass' mode that knows when the temperature outside is heating up and stops the heat recovery process, leaving the system supplying just fresher, filtered air which offers a cooling effect from the continuous airflow in the warmer summer months.

How does MVHR Work?

Why choose MVHR for your home?

Modern homes are being built with ultra insulation levels to help to 'keep the heat in' and make our homes more energy efficient. The same is happening with extensions and renovations of existing housing stock.

With all this insulation, our homes can't breathe and neither can we!  We are effectively sealing up the indoor environment meaning the moisture we produce, chemicals from cleaning products, dust and more will all stay trapped in our home and in the air we breathe. Did you know - a family of 4 creates up to 24 pints PER DAY of moisture from simply cooking, showering, boiling the kettle, breathing and hanging clothes to dry!

Think of MVHR as the lungs of your home... If you INSULATE you must VENTILATE!

Is every MVHR System the same?

MVHR is a great ventilation solution for homes -  for new builds and it can also be retrofitted (remember you need to think about where ducting will go!) If you are renovating or in the design stages of making changes to your home, this is the best time to install MVHR as it allows more accessibility for your systems design and ducting location!

Each MVHR system is bespoke to the property and is made up of the unit and the ducting.  Both are crucially important to the overall installed performance of the system in the home!

The specification of a MVHR system will depend on a number of factors;

  • Insulations levels of your property
  • Floor Area
  • Number of wet rooms
  • Number of habitable rooms
  • Space for the unit to be located
  • Ceiling void depth for ducting
  • External terminations
  • Location

Project Extension!

Happy Air Shop Customer!

This project was a full renovation of a 1700's home into a 5 bedroom build using reclaimed stone from the original medieval building.

Newbuilds are heavily insulated and airtight, so ventilation is important to ensure the home can breathe, it also extracts pollution and excess moisture and replenishes with fresh air. This project required two Vent Axia Sentinel Kinetic units and Ubbink semi-rigid ducting.
